Myanmar’s legislative body has officially enacted the 'Anti-Online Scam Bill,' a measure aimed at curbing the proliferation of illegal online scam centers within the country. According to Union Parliament Speaker Aung Lin Dwe, the new law permits the use of capital punishment for those found guilty of kidnapping, detaining, or using violence to force individuals into labor for these criminal enterprises. The bill was approved during a joint meeting of the lower and upper houses held in the capital, Naypyidaw.

The move comes amid increasing international pressure on Myanmar to address the human trafficking and cyber-fraud hubs that have emerged in border regions. While the government frames this as a necessary legal tool to combat organized crime, the practical application of the law remains a subject of observation. The legislative process was confirmed by lower house MP Aye Chan, who verified the passage of the amendments to the draft bill during Tuesday’s broadcasted session.
