Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke has officially unveiled the government's strategy to manage Australia's net overseas migration (NOM) levels. The policy aims to reduce the current migration intake to 245,000 for the current financial year, with a further reduction target of 225,000 set for the 2027-28 period. Recent data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) shows that net migration has already begun to trend downward, falling from 299,000 in December to 292,000 in the year ending March.

Central to the government’s plan is a shift in how international students and visa holders are managed. The new measures are designed to prevent international students from extending their stays indefinitely, a move the government suggests will help stabilize population growth. Additionally, the government is introducing enhanced enforcement measures specifically targeting foreign citizens who remain in the country without a valid visa. These individuals will face increased pressure to depart Australia as part of the broader effort to tighten immigration compliance. While the government frames these changes as a necessary step to manage migration levels, the policy represents a significant tightening of the rules governing both temporary residents and those currently lacking legal status.
