Kieren Perkins, a former Olympic gold medalist and current head of the Australian Sports Commission, has issued a warning regarding the future sustainability of the Olympic Games. Perkins argues that the International Olympic Committee (IOC) must modernize the program for the 2032 Brisbane Games to prevent the event from becoming overly bloated and difficult to manage.

Central to Perkins' argument is the rapid expansion of the Olympic program over the last several decades. Data shows that the number of sports included in the Games has risen significantly, moving from 28 sports at the Sydney 2000 Olympics to 36 scheduled for the Los Angeles 2028 Games. Perkins contends that many of these additions, along with the proliferation of multiple disciplines within single sports, lack modern relevance and place an undue burden on host cities due to the requirement for specialized venues.

The IOC has acknowledged the issue, signaling a desire to curb the long-term trend of adding new sports. However, the tension remains between the desire to keep the Games inclusive of new, popular activities and the practical limitations of hosting an event that continues to grow in size and complexity. Perkins’ comments highlight a growing debate within the sports community about whether the Olympic movement should prioritize tradition or prioritize efficiency and relevance in a changing global landscape.
