The Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement has initiated a campaign calling on the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) to revoke or suspend Israel’s membership in the international body. The petition, which coincides with the opening of the UNGA’s 81st session, was formally addressed to the session's president, Khalil al-Rahman.

In its appeal, the BDS movement argues that Israel’s current actions warrant a response similar to the diplomatic isolation imposed on South Africa during the apartheid era. The movement contends that the UN should utilize its authority to hold member states accountable for violations of international law and human rights. By referencing the historical precedent of South Africa, the petitioners are attempting to frame the suspension of Israel as a necessary step for the UN to maintain its credibility and commitment to its founding principles.

While the petition has been publicized by the BDS movement and reported via the Palestinian news agency Wafa, there has been no formal response or indication of action from the UN General Assembly leadership regarding the request. The UN charter provides specific mechanisms for the suspension of member states, which typically require a recommendation from the Security Council—a body where the United States holds veto power—making such a suspension a significant legal and political hurdle. The BDS movement continues to advocate for this measure as part of its broader campaign of economic and political pressure against the Israeli government.
