According to Van Wymersch, these properties are being used to hide narcotics, weapons, money, and even people involved in human trafficking.

Van Wymersch noted that the rise of e-commerce and digital booking platforms has provided criminal organizations with new, flexible logistical tools. By frequently rotating through different rental properties, gangs can avoid detection and maintain a decentralized presence. While acknowledging that authorities currently lack precise data on the total scale of this activity, Van Wymersch emphasized that the ease of access provided by these platforms is a significant concern for law enforcement agencies attempting to track criminal movements.

The report highlights a broader challenge for regulators: balancing the convenience of the gig economy with the security risks posed by anonymous or short-term stays. As criminal groups adapt to modern digital infrastructure, officials are beginning to evaluate how to better monitor or regulate these platforms to prevent them from becoming essential components of organized crime logistics.
