Block, the financial technology company led by Jack Dorsey, has launched a new initiative called x402 to integrate Bitcoin Lightning Network payments into AI agent workflows. The protocol is designed to solve the challenge of how AI agents—software programs that perform tasks autonomously—can pay for resources, such as API access or data, without human intervention.

By utilizing the Lightning Network, which is a layer-two solution built on top of the Bitcoin blockchain, the x402 protocol allows for near-instant, low-cost transactions. This is intended to replace traditional subscription-based models or credit card payments, which are often difficult for AI agents to manage independently. The integration effectively turns Bitcoin into a native currency for the internet, enabling machines to transact with one another in real-time.

While the technical implementation focuses on the efficiency of Lightning payments, the move highlights Block’s broader strategy to position Bitcoin as the primary financial rail for future technological infrastructure.
