The government of Tamil Nadu, led by Chief Minister Vijay, has announced plans to construct a new state-of-the-art Secretariat and Assembly complex. The project, estimated to cost Rs 1,200 crore, is slated to occupy 26 acres of land in the coastal neighborhood of Pattinapakkam in Chennai.

While the government frames the project as a necessary modernization of state infrastructure, the proposal has met with immediate resistance from the local fishing community. Fishermen in the area have expressed significant anxiety regarding the development, questioning how the construction will affect their daily operations and their ability to access the coastline for their work. The core of their concern centers on the potential displacement of their traditional workspace and the long-term impact on their food security and economic stability.

Currently, the project is in the proposal stage, and the government has not yet detailed specific mitigation plans for the fishing community. The tension highlights a recurring conflict in Chennai between large-scale urban development projects and the preservation of traditional coastal livelihoods. As the project moves forward, the primary point of contention remains the balance between government administrative needs and the rights of the local population whose presence in the area predates the proposed construction.
