The Chinese government has taken a significant step toward opening its commercial space sector to private investment by granting a trial permit to Zhejiang Geespace Technology. Geespace, which operates as the commercial space arm of the automotive giant Geely, received approval from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) to test satellite-based Internet of Things (IoT) services.

This two-year trial period is part of a broader national strategy to integrate private capital into the burgeoning satellite communications market. By allowing a private entity to operate in this space, regulators are signaling a shift in how China manages its orbital infrastructure, which has historically been dominated by state-run enterprises. The IoT services in question are expected to support connectivity for various applications, ranging from logistics and transportation to industrial monitoring.
