The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) has officially approved a new work item proposal led by China to draft international standards for solid-state batteries used in electric vehicles. This move represents a significant step in China's strategy to influence the regulatory framework of emerging green technologies. While China is spearheading the project, the development process includes technical contributions from experts based in France, Japan, and South Korea.

The proposed standards are intended to define the application guidelines, performance requirements, and testing conditions for rechargeable solid-state batteries. Solid-state technology is widely viewed by the automotive industry as a critical successor to current lithium-ion batteries, offering the potential for higher energy density and improved safety. By establishing these standards, the participating nations aim to create a unified global benchmark for a technology that is currently in the early stages of commercialization.
