The Chinese Ministry of Commerce (Mofcom) has intensified its opposition to a new French law aimed at curbing the environmental impact of fast fashion. During recent discussions with French companies operating within China, ministry spokesperson Huang Ling stated that the legislation acts as a protectionist measure that unfairly penalizes Chinese businesses. Beijing has called on French authorities to cease the implementation of the law, characterizing it as a barrier to fair market competition.

Beyond the specific complaints regarding the fast fashion law, China has also raised concerns regarding the broader competitive landscape. Mofcom officials alleged that certain French companies have received financial support from the European Union and its member states. According to the Chinese government, these subsidies may have been utilized to bolster the operations of French firms within China, creating an uneven playing field. While China frames the French law as a discriminatory trade barrier, the French government has previously defended such measures as necessary steps to address the waste and environmental degradation associated with ultra-fast fashion models. The dispute highlights growing tensions between Beijing and European regulators over trade policy, industrial subsidies, and environmental standards.
