The Chinese government is taking a more active role in regulating the country’s rapidly expanding microdrama sector. According to the National Radio and Television Administration (NRTA), the goal is to shift the industry away from a focus on high-speed, AI-generated content toward higher-quality, live-action productions. Officials argue that while AI has provided new tools for innovation, it has also introduced significant challenges regarding content standards and the protection of intellectual property rights.

Wang Xiaoliang, representing the NRTA, emphasized that the government intends to provide greater support for live-action dramas, signaling a preference for human-led creative processes over purely algorithmic production. The move comes as the microdrama market experiences a boom, characterized by short, addictive episodes often produced at a high volume. By tightening oversight, regulators hope to curb the proliferation of low-quality content that has accompanied the rise of automated production tools. While the industry has benefited from the efficiency of AI, the government’s current stance suggests that these technological advancements must now operate within a more rigid framework of rights safeguards and cultural quality control.
