Chinese state broadcaster CCTV has issued a sharp rebuke of recent comments made by Raymond Greene, the director of the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT). During the 2026 Taipei Security Dialogue, Greene suggested that Taiwan does not need to prove it can win a war outright to deter an adversary, but rather that it can make the prospect of landing forces on the island prohibitively difficult for an opponent.

In response, Chinese state media characterized these remarks as evidence that the United States and Taiwanese 'separatists' are intentionally increasing the danger to the island. The report specifically utilized the term 'cannon fodder' to describe the perceived US strategy, suggesting that Washington intends to use Taiwan as a sacrificial pawn in a broader conflict with mainland China.

While the US maintains that its support for Taiwan is focused on deterrence and maintaining the status quo, Beijing views such security dialogues and military cooperation as direct interference in its internal affairs. The disagreement centers on the interpretation of US military strategy: Washington frames its efforts as defensive measures to prevent conflict, while Beijing frames the same actions as provocative steps that endanger the local population to serve American geopolitical interests.
