In December, the Wallis-Annenberg Wildlife Crossing is set to open in Southern California, marking the completion of what is described as the largest structure of its kind globally. The project aims to address the issue of wildlife mortality on major roadways, which has long been a significant challenge for local ecosystems.

The initiative gained momentum following the public attention surrounding a mountain lion known as P-22. In 2012, the animal successfully crossed a busy freeway but subsequently became trapped in the Hollywood Hills, unable to safely return to its original habitat or find a mate due to the surrounding urban sprawl. P-22 became a symbol for the need to reconnect fragmented habitats that are bisected by high-traffic infrastructure.

While the crossing is primarily intended to facilitate safe passage for wildlife, it represents a broader effort to mitigate the environmental impact of human transportation systems. The structure serves as a bridge over one of the state's most perilous freeways, providing a permanent solution to the isolation that many local species face. By creating a safe corridor, planners hope to reduce the number of animal-vehicle collisions and support the long-term health of the region's mountain lion population and other wildlife.
