This area has been the site of significant public order issues for decades. The last time the Orange Order was permitted to march down Garvaghy Road was in 1998. That event was followed by a period of intense violence across Northern Ireland, which included numerous public order incidents and several murders. While the Parades Commission initially permitted the march, the legal status of the event remained in flux until the early hours of Sunday morning.
