Courtney Lawes, a centurion who earned 105 caps for England, has suggested that the Rugby Football Union (RFU) should reconsider its long-standing policy of only selecting players who compete for domestic Premiership clubs. Currently, England players who move to overseas leagues, such as those in France’s Top 14, are effectively ineligible for international selection.

Lawes argues that the current rule prevents the national team from utilizing some of its most experienced and talented players. By restricting the selection pool to the domestic league, Lawes suggests that England is placing itself at a competitive disadvantage compared to other nations that do not impose similar geographical restrictions on their players. While the RFU has historically maintained this policy to keep players within the English system and ensure their availability for training camps, Lawes believes the modern landscape of professional rugby requires more flexibility.

There is currently no official response from the RFU regarding a potential change to this policy. While Lawes’ perspective highlights a desire for a broader talent selection, the debate remains centered on whether domestic control over player welfare and availability outweighs the benefit of accessing players who have gained experience in foreign leagues.
