A coalition of more than 70 members of Parliament and peers has formally requested that Prime Minister Andy Burnham take decisive action to block the development of artificial superintelligence (ASI). The group, which includes senior members from the Labour, Conservative, Liberal Democrat, and SNP parties, as well as 15 former government ministers and the former head of the civil service, Robin Butler, is pushing for the government to back a new bill introduced in the House of Commons this week.

The push for legislative intervention is driven by recent expert warnings suggesting a 10% probability that the development of ASI could result in catastrophic outcomes for humanity. Proponents of the bill argue that the UK should take a leadership role in establishing an international movement to regulate or halt the advancement of these systems before they reach a point of no return. While the letter emphasizes the need for urgent government backing, it remains unclear how the administration intends to respond to these calls or how such a ban would be enforced on a global scale. The proposal highlights a growing divide between those who view ASI as a manageable technological evolution and those who believe it represents an existential threat that requires immediate, restrictive government action.
