Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) has officially abandoned a project to increase the number of foot-washing stations within its international terminal. The decision follows a direct intervention from Texas Governor Greg Abbott, who publicly threatened to pull state funding for the airport if the expansion proceeded. These facilities, known as wudu stations, are used by Muslim travelers to perform ritual ablutions before prayer.

Airport officials confirmed that the decision to cancel the project was made in response to the Governor's ultimatum. The airport currently hosts two post-security washing stations that were installed in 2019. According to airport management, these existing facilities have functioned for several years without any reported operational issues or public complaints.

The controversy centers on the intersection of public funding and religious accommodation. While the airport viewed the stations as a standard amenity for a diverse, international travel hub, the Governor’s office characterized the expansion as an inappropriate use of resources. The Independent reports that the airport has opted to prioritize the preservation of state funding over the planned infrastructure upgrade. No further plans for additional stations have been announced, and it remains unclear whether the existing stations will be affected by the current political climate surrounding the issue.
