A catastrophic flash flood and mudslide event has struck the border region between Nepal and Tibet, leading to a rising death toll that now stands at approximately 470 people. The disaster, which occurred two days ago, has left more than 1,500 individuals missing, according to reports. Rescue efforts, which were initially underway, have been paused by authorities in both Nepal and China due to the high risk of further flooding caused by an overflowing barrier lake.

There is a slight discrepancy in the reported death toll between sources, with Al Jazeera citing a figure surpassing 470, while The Guardian reports 469 confirmed deaths.

In the wake of the disaster, the Nepalese government has declined offers of international assistance for search-and-rescue operations. Lok Bahadur Chhetri, a spokesperson for Nepal’s foreign ministry, stated on Friday that the country’s own security agencies are managing the situation effectively and that foreign help is not required at this time. This decision comes despite reports that several countries have nationals among the missing. Meanwhile, Chinese state media has confirmed that rescue operations in Tibet remain on hold as officials monitor the stability of the breached dam and the potential for renewed flooding in the area.
