Google has announced a significant leadership restructuring within its AI division, Google DeepMind. Sir Demis Hassabis, who co-founded the London-based lab in 2010 and has served as its CEO since its acquisition by Google, is vacating his primary managerial position. Hassabis, a recent Nobel laureate, will transition into the role of chair for DeepMind while simultaneously taking on a new corporate-wide position as chief scientist at Alphabet, Google’s parent company.

Following this transition, Koray Kavukcuoglu, who currently serves as DeepMind’s chief technology officer, will take over leadership of the organization. Kavukcuoglu will hold the title of senior vice-president. This move marks a notable shift for the company, as Hassabis has been a central figure in the development of Google’s AI strategy and the broader AI research landscape for over a decade.

The restructuring comes during a period of intense competition in the artificial intelligence sector. While the company has framed this as a strategic evolution to better align its research and corporate goals, the departure of a founder from the CEO role often signals a shift in operational focus.
