DR Congo screens 300 boat passengers following suspected Ebola death
Congolese health officials have intercepted a river boat near Kinshasa to screen over 300 passengers for Ebola. The action follows the death of a traveler on board who exhibited symptoms consistent with the virus.
Health authorities in the Democratic Republic of Congo have initiated emergency screening protocols for more than 300 passengers after a traveler died on a river boat under circumstances suggestive of an Ebola infection. The vessel was intercepted on Wednesday in Maluku, a location approximately 65 kilometers upstream from the capital city, Kinshasa.
In response to the potential health threat, the Ministry of Health deployed a mobile laboratory to the site to conduct testing and monitor those on board. Body Ilonga, the secretary general of the health ministry, confirmed that the intervention was necessary to prevent a possible outbreak and to determine if the virus had spread among the passengers during the journey. The boat remains under quarantine while medical teams assess the health status of everyone on the vessel. As of now, authorities are working to contain the situation and prevent the virus from reaching the densely populated capital region.
