In a recent speech in Vienna, European Central Bank (ECB) President Christine Lagarde emphasized the strategic necessity for Europe to foster its own artificial intelligence ecosystem. Lagarde argued that by investing in domestic AI models and building local datacenters, the European Union can mitigate the risk of being marginalized or cut off by the two dominant global powers in the sector: the United States and China.

Lagarde pointed to the current disparity in AI development, noting that the United States has already produced 59 notable AI models. She suggested that Europe does not necessarily need to lead the global market, but rather must develop technology that is "good enough" to handle essential tasks independently. By establishing this domestic capability, Lagarde believes the threat of external geopolitical pressure—specifically the risk of being denied access to critical AI infrastructure—would be significantly reduced.
