Under these rules, technology companies are now legally obligated to ensure that users are aware when they are interacting with an AI-powered chatbot or viewing content that has been manipulated or created by artificial intelligence. The primary goal of the legislation is to provide the public with the necessary context to distinguish between human-created content and synthetic media. While the regulation focuses on disclosure, it represents a significant shift in how the EU manages the risks associated with rapidly evolving generative AI tools. By forcing companies to label synthetic content, the EU hopes to mitigate the potential for these tools to be used to malign individuals or manipulate public opinion.
