A coalition of Europe’s most influential football clubs, organized under the European Football Clubs (EFC) group, recently issued a formal threat to boycott future editions of the FIFA Club World Cup. The ultimatum was delivered in a letter addressed to FIFA Secretary General Mattias Grafström, demanding that FIFA President Gianni Infantino withdraw his 'Fifa Forward Enterprise' scheme.

The clubs stipulated that their participation in future tournaments is contingent upon the finalization of a joint venture between the EFC and FIFA. According to the EFC, a framework for this partnership had already been discussed, and they insisted that this agreement be fully executed before any decisions regarding television rights for future competitions are finalized. The threat was reportedly issued only hours before the FIFA plan in question was ultimately scrapped.

While the EFC frames this as a necessary step to ensure collaborative governance and protect their interests in the commercial aspects of the sport, the situation highlights ongoing friction between European club leadership and FIFA’s central administration. The dispute centers on the balance of power regarding tournament control and the distribution of revenue generated from broadcast rights. As of now, the collapse of the FIFA plan has temporarily eased tensions, but the underlying demand for a formal joint venture remains a point of contention between the two organizations.
