Misty Roberts, the 44-year-old former mayor of a Louisiana town, was released from custody on Labor Day after completing a 90-day jail term. Roberts was convicted of raping a 16-year-old boy, a crime that occurred while she was serving in her elected capacity as mayor.

Her release comes just one week after a judicial hearing regarding her sentencing. Prosecutors had petitioned the court to impose a harsher sentence, arguing that the original term was insufficient. However, Judge Kent Savoie denied the request to extend her time in jail. During the proceedings, Judge Savoie admitted that he had made a legal error when he originally determined the 90-day sentence, noting that he had incorrectly relied on a list of more than 30 cases that had been resolved through different legal processes. Despite acknowledging this mistake, the judge did not alter the duration of the sentence Roberts was required to serve.

State corrections records confirm that Roberts has now fulfilled the requirements of her sentence and is no longer in custody. The case has drawn significant public attention due to the defendant's former position of authority and the nature of the conviction involving a minor.
