Former Malaysian Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob appeared in a Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court on Thursday to face charges related to the non-disclosure of assets. The 66-year-old politician entered a plea of not guilty regarding allegations that he failed to declare millions of ringgit in both local and foreign currencies, as well as a quantity of gold bars.

The charges were brought under Section 36(2) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act. This legal action follows a period of over a year since the initial investigation into his financial declarations began.

This development is significant within the current Malaysian political landscape, as Ismail Sabri is the second former head of government to be charged with criminal offenses since Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim assumed office in 2022. The current administration has made the eradication of systemic corruption a central pillar of its policy agenda. While the legal proceedings are now underway, the defense maintains that the former leader is innocent of the charges brought against him by the MACC.
