Abdul Azeez Abdul Rahim, a senior member of the United Malays National Organisation (Umno) and former chairman of the pilgrimage fund Tabung Haji, appeared in court on Wednesday to face multiple charges. He pleaded not guilty to allegations of abusing his position to influence a 193.5 million ringgit (US$47.5 million) investment and accepting bribes related to road projects.

As a veteran member of the Umno Supreme Council, Azeez is currently the most prominent political figure to face charges following a royal commission of inquiry into the financial management of Tabung Haji. The fund, which manages the savings of Malaysian Muslims for their pilgrimage to Mecca, has been the subject of intense scrutiny regarding its past investment strategies and governance.

While the prosecution alleges that Azeez used his influence for personal gain, the defense maintains his innocence.
