If prices were to reach double digits, these signs would be unable to accurately reflect the cost to consumers.

While current national averages remain well below the $10 threshold, the physical limitation of these displays highlights a potential infrastructure challenge for retailers. The issue is primarily a hardware constraint, as the digital segments used to form the numbers are hard-wired to accommodate a maximum of three digits plus a decimal point, or four digits in total. Station owners would need to invest in hardware upgrades or software recalibrations to display prices in the double digits should market conditions ever necessitate such a change. Currently, the industry has not reported widespread plans for immediate upgrades, as the $10 price point remains a hypothetical scenario rather than a current market reality.
