Haiti’s foreign minister has officially called for the international community to extend the mandate of the Multinational Security Support (MSS) mission. The task force, which was deployed to help the Haitian National Police combat rampant gang violence, is currently a focal point of the nation's strategy to restore order.

Government officials emphasize that the presence of these international forces is a prerequisite for holding credible elections. With a national vote currently slated for December, the administration argues that without the security provided by the task force, the electoral process would be too dangerous for both candidates and voters. The gangs, which have seized control of large portions of the capital, Port-au-Prince, remain a significant obstacle to government operations and humanitarian aid distribution.

While the government maintains that the mission is a vital component of its stabilization plan, the effectiveness of the current deployment remains a subject of ongoing debate. Critics of the mission have previously raised concerns regarding the lack of oversight and the slow pace of progress in dismantling gang strongholds. The international community, led by countries like Kenya, has yet to issue a formal response to the request for an extension, though discussions regarding the mission's future are expected to intensify as the December deadline approaches.
