Hong Kong officials conducted a major counterterrorism drill at the redeveloped Huanggang border crossing this past Saturday. Approximately 5,000 civil servants from 30 different government bureaus participated in the exercise, which was designed to test the facility's security protocols and its ability to manage sudden surges in passenger volume. This event marks the first time such a security drill has been performed at the updated checkpoint site.

The Huanggang crossing, which connects Hong Kong and Shenzhen, has undergone roughly six years of redevelopment. According to reports, the facility is slated to begin operations as early as September. Once fully functional, the port will transition into the city’s second round-the-clock checkpoint. A significant change following the overhaul is that the facility will no longer accommodate goods vehicles, shifting its focus exclusively to passenger traffic.

While the Security Bureau has emphasized the importance of the drill for operational readiness, the broader context of the project involves a shift in regional logistics and border management.
