Tung Chee-hwa, a prominent political figure who led Hong Kong through its transition from a British colony to a Special Administrative Region of China, passed away on Tuesday at the age of 89. His death was confirmed early Wednesday morning through an official statement released by his office.

Born in Shanghai, Tung was a shipping magnate before being selected as the first chief executive of Hong Kong in 1997.
