The UK government’s recent decision to impose sanctions on goods originating from Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank has sparked a wide range of reactions. A coalition of eight Arab and Muslim-majority nations—including Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Turkey—issued a joint statement welcoming the move, characterizing it as a positive step toward restricting trade with settlements that are widely considered illegal under international law.

Within Israel, the reaction is divided. A group of prominent Israeli figures, including former government ministers, diplomats, and military officials, released a statement supporting the sanctions. They framed the policy as a necessary response to settlement expansion and violence, explicitly distinguishing between the actions of “Jewish terrorists” and the legitimacy of the Israeli state. They argued that the sanctions are a direct consequence of failures within the current Israeli government and security apparatus.

Conversely, the sanctions have faced significant pushback from mainstream British Jewish leadership. Sir Ephraim Mirvis, the UK’s Chief Rabbi, condemned the decision, labeling it a “dark day for British Jews” and expressing concern that the policy could embolden those who harbor antisemitic sentiment. The Board of Deputies of British Jews and other Jewish advocacy groups echoed these concerns, warning that the sanctions could have negative repercussions for the Jewish community in the UK. Meanwhile, a separate group of British rabbis has publicly broken with this stance, offering their support for the sanctions and arguing that the time for inaction regarding settler violence has passed.
