The Indus Waters Treaty, a foundational agreement governing the river systems that support approximately 300 million people in India and Pakistan, is currently at the center of a significant legal dispute. Despite decades of regional conflict, nuclear tensions, and severed diplomatic relations, the treaty had remained a rare point of stability between the two nations since 1960.

In April 2023, the Indian government suspended the treaty, citing a militant attack on tourists in Kashmir, which New Delhi attributed to Pakistani involvement. However, an international tribunal in The Hague has now issued a ruling stating that India did not have the legal authority to unilaterally suspend the agreement.
