Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz announced on Tuesday that Israeli military forces will continue their occupation of the Jabal al-Sheikh area, also known as Mount Hermon, located along the border between Syria and Lebanon. During a visit to the site, Katz explained that the decision is a strategic measure to counter ongoing security threats and ensure the safety of Israeli citizens.

Katz emphasized the tactical importance of the location, noting that the position allows Israeli forces to overlook Damascus, which is situated approximately 35 kilometers away, as well as the Bekaa Valley in Lebanon, a region known as a stronghold for Hezbollah. According to the Defense Minister, maintaining a presence in this high-altitude area is essential for providing oversight and protection for the communities located in the Golan Heights. The announcement signals a commitment to a prolonged military footprint in the border zone, with Katz stating the forces would remain there for “as long as there are threats.”
