The Israeli military reported that it successfully targeted and killed two Hamas commanders during separate airstrikes in Gaza over the weekend. According to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), Salem Jamal Abd al-Rahman Abu Labad, a commander within Hamas’s Nukhba special forces, was killed in southern Gaza on Saturday. The military alleges that Abu Labad participated in the October 2023 attacks. Additionally, the IDF stated that Muhammad Abd al-Nasser Muhammad Khatib, identified as a commander in the Maghazi Battalion, was killed in a strike in central Gaza on Friday.

Simultaneously, diplomatic efforts continue outside of the combat zone. A delegation from Hamas, led by West Bank leader Zaher Jabarin, met with Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) officials, including secretary-general Ziyad al-Nakhalah, in Cairo. In a statement released via Telegram, Hamas indicated that the groups discussed the ongoing military offensive in Gaza as well as rising tensions in the West Bank and Jerusalem. The primary objective stated by the Palestinian factions remains a complete cessation of Israeli military operations and a full withdrawal of Israeli forces from the Gaza Strip.

While the Israeli military focuses on the tactical elimination of specific Hamas leadership, the discussions in Cairo highlight the persistent gap between the two sides regarding the conditions for ending the conflict. There is currently no indication that the military operations in Gaza have slowed in response to the diplomatic meetings occurring in Egypt.
