Italy has officially extended its suspension of Schengen open-border agreements with Spain for another 15 days. These restrictions were originally implemented one month ago in response to a sudden and massive influx of migrants into Ceuta, a small Spanish territory located on the North African coast. The border controls effectively end the free movement of people between the two nations during this period.

While the border restrictions are the primary focus of the diplomatic tension, the cause of the migrant surge remains a point of contention. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez recently stated that there are indications of foreign interference regarding the event. Sanchez specifically alleged that Russia and Israel may have spread disinformation concerning Spain’s migration policies, which he claims acted as a catalyst for the rush of migrants. Notably, Sanchez stated there is currently no evidence linking the Moroccan government to the incident.

Reports indicate that between July 30 and 31, over 72,000 migrants crossed irregularly from Morocco into Ceuta. This event has caused significant concern across the European Union, as Ceuta represents one of the only two land borders the bloc shares with the African continent.
