Liverpool Football Club has officially confirmed the return of Julian Ward to the position of sporting director. Ward, a familiar face at Anfield, previously served in this capacity during the 2022-23 season before transitioning into a role as technical director for Fenway Sports Group (FSG), the club's ownership entity. His return comes as a direct replacement for Richard Hughes.

Richard Hughes, who served as sporting director for two and a half years, has departed the club to join the Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal. His exit occurred shortly after the conclusion of the summer transfer window. According to reports, the search for his successor was conducted rapidly and was overseen by FSG president Mike Gordon.

Ward’s appointment marks a return to the club's internal structure after spending the last two years working more broadly across FSG’s operations.
