The Kerala state government has publicly committed to protecting farmers from land displacement related to environmental conservation efforts. Forest Minister A.K. Saseendran stated that the state will ensure no land is acquired by force under the guise of environmental laws. This announcement comes as the state prepares to negotiate with the central government regarding the implementation of the Ecologically Sensitive Area (ESA) notification.

The state’s current strategy involves restricting the ESA notification to 98 villages, a move intended to balance environmental protection with the rights of the local agricultural community. By narrowing the geographic scope of these regulations, the government aims to prevent widespread land acquisition that has previously caused concern among rural landowners. The Forest Minister emphasized that the state’s position is to safeguard the interests of farmers while still adhering to necessary ecological guidelines.

While the state government has taken a firm stance against forced acquisition, the process remains subject to approval from the central government. The tension between environmental conservation mandates and the economic stability of farming communities remains a central point of discussion in Kerala's policy landscape.
