Silverberg, who currently serves as the organization's president and chief operating officer, is a former U.S. ambassador and a recognized policy expert. She will take over the leadership role from Josh Bolten, a former White House chief of staff who has headed the organization for the past decade.

Bolten is scheduled to step down from his position on January 31.
