The village of Hanle, situated at an altitude of 4,500 meters in Ladakh, has gained national attention as the site of India’s first Dark Sky Reserve. Due to its high elevation and minimal light pollution, the area offers exceptional visibility of the night sky, attracting a growing number of tourists interested in stargazing.

To support this influx of visitors, a local initiative has begun training women from the community to serve as 'astro-ambassadors.' These women are tasked with guiding tourists, explaining the celestial phenomena visible from the reserve, and managing the logistics of the burgeoning astro-tourism sector. The program is designed to provide residents with sustainable income opportunities that do not require leaving their remote mountain homes.

While the initiative is primarily framed as an economic and educational success, it also highlights the intersection of scientific research and community development. By leveraging the unique geographical conditions of the Himalayas, the project aims to turn a remote, high-altitude location into a destination for both professional astronomers and amateur stargazers.
