The Liberal Democrats are the first of the three major UK political parties to formally oppose the EHRC’s approach, labeling the document as both “discriminatory and unworkable.” While the Green Party had previously expressed similar opposition, the Lib Dem vote marks a significant shift in parliamentary discourse regarding how equality law should be applied to transgender individuals.

The EHRC guidance was designed to clarify how service providers and employers should interpret the law in light of the court's decision.
