Macquarie University has begun utilizing an AI chatbot, referred to as a 'Virtual Peer,' as part of the curriculum for two mandatory psychology units. The technology is designed to engage students by asking questions and guiding them through specific scenario-based exercises as part of their weekly coursework.

According to university officials, the AI activities are intended to supplement core learning materials, which include online readings, videos, and quizzes. The university emphasizes that participation in these AI-driven exercises is optional. Furthermore, the institution clarified that the AI tools are not replacing human instructors in a traditional sense, but rather serving as an additional resource within the digital learning environment.

While the university frames the technology as a supportive tool, the shift highlights a broader trend among higher education institutions to integrate generative AI into teaching responsibilities. The implementation has raised questions regarding the balance between automated instruction and traditional classroom interaction, particularly as the university notes that neither the core online activities nor the new AI components are strictly mandatory for students.
