MI5 has issued a rare public warning to British academic institutions regarding their partnerships with the China General Technology Research Institute (CGTRI), also referred to as the China Academy of General Technology (CAGT). The security service alleges that the organization is a front for the Chinese Ministry of State Security (MSS) and is being used to illicitly acquire sensitive research and technology projects developed within UK universities.

According to security officials, the institute has provided grant funding to over 100 academics across various British universities. MI5 characterizes these financial arrangements as a "significant threat" to national security, arguing that the funding serves as a vehicle for state-sponsored espionage. The agency is now urging all involved researchers and university administrators to immediately cease collaboration with the entity.
