Former Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak continues to serve his prison sentence at Kajang Prison following a recent decision regarding his legal status. Najib, who was convicted on corruption charges related to the 1MDB scandal, was granted a partial pardon that includes the possibility of serving the remainder of his sentence under house arrest.

However, his legal representatives, Messrs Shafee & Co, issued a statement on Sunday clarifying that the transition to house arrest is contingent upon specific conditions set forth in the pardon. The primary obstacle currently cited is a financial penalty of 50 million ringgit, equivalent to approximately US$12.3 million. According to the statement, Najib and his legal team are actively reviewing the terms of the pardon to determine the next steps. The former prime minister will remain incarcerated until the fine is paid to the court, as the transfer to house arrest cannot proceed until all conditions are officially satisfied.
