The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) confirmed on Thursday that a horse in Grant County, New Mexico, is infected with the New World screwworm. This parasite, which feeds on the living tissue of warm-blooded animals, poses a significant threat to livestock and wildlife populations. This incident marks the second confirmed case of the parasite in New Mexico in recent times.

The timing of this discovery is particularly sensitive, as it coincides with the state's impending plans to resume the importation of livestock from Mexico.
