August marks the ninth anniversary of the mass exodus of Rohingya Muslims from Myanmar, a crisis that began following a violent military crackdown in Rakhine State. Since 2015, and accelerating significantly in 2017, hundreds of thousands of people fled across the border into Bangladesh to escape systemic persecution, state-sponsored violence, and the destruction of their homes.

Today, the majority of the Rohingya population resides in the sprawling refugee camps of Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh. While international aid organizations have provided essential services such as food, water, and medical care, the long-term future for the refugees remains uncertain. Repatriation efforts to Myanmar have largely stalled due to ongoing instability, security concerns, and the lack of a clear path to citizenship or safety for the Rohingya in their home country.

International observers and human rights groups continue to call for increased global attention and funding, noting that the crisis has become a 'protracted emergency.' While the initial influx of refugees drew significant global media coverage, aid agencies report that donor fatigue is now a major concern. The refugees face restricted movement, limited access to formal education, and a lack of employment opportunities within the camps. As the crisis enters its tenth year, the international community remains divided on how to achieve a sustainable solution that addresses both the humanitarian needs in Bangladesh and the political root causes within Myanmar.
