Nvidia is officially expanding the reach of its DLSS 5 AI rendering technology, confirming that the feature will be supported on RTX 40-series GPUs in addition to the newly released RTX 50-series. The company’s initial strategy was to limit the rollout exclusively to the latest hardware, citing a desire to maintain developer control over the artistic presentation of games.

However, the company’s plans shifted following the emergence of leaked software versions. Independent modders successfully ported the technology to run on a wide variety of hardware, including older cards, while also unlocking user-adjustable settings that Nvidia had previously restricted. By confirming official support for the 40-series, Nvidia is moving to regain control over the rollout of its AI upscaling software. While the company maintains that its primary focus remains on optimizing performance for the new architecture, the move acknowledges the reality that users and modders have already demonstrated the technology's viability on previous-generation hardware. Nvidia spokesperson Rajal Maharaj confirmed the update to The Verge, though the company has not yet provided a specific timeline for when these older cards will receive official driver support.
