The debate surrounding the implementation of a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in India has resurfaced following comments from Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Shah recently asserted that the central government aims to implement the UCC across all 21 states currently governed by the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) before the 2029 general elections.

In response to this timeline, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressed skepticism regarding the practical execution of such a policy. Abdullah questioned the internal cohesion of the ruling coalition, specifically asking how the government plans to move forward with the UCC if its various political allies are not prepared to support or adopt the measure. The UCC is a long-standing proposal in Indian politics that seeks to replace personal laws based on religious scriptures with a single, unified set of civil laws governing all citizens regarding marriage, divorce, inheritance, and adoption.

While the central government views the UCC as a necessary step toward national integration and gender equality, critics and several regional political parties have raised concerns about the impact on religious freedom and the cultural diversity of India's minority communities. The implementation of such a code requires significant legislative consensus, which Abdullah suggests may be difficult to achieve given the diverse political interests within the NDA coalition. As of now, the central government has not provided specific details on how it plans to reconcile potential disagreements with its allies regarding the scope and enforcement of the proposed code.
