A recent Freedom of Information (FoI) request has brought to light that over 65 works of art belonging to the UK parliamentary collection have gone missing since 2024. The list of unaccounted-for items includes a variety of historical and political artifacts, such as a photograph of former Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli, an engraved portrait of abolitionist William Wilberforce, and a satirical cartoon featuring Barbara Castle.

Other notable missing items include a photograph of Margaret Beckett, who holds the distinction of being the first female UK foreign secretary and the first woman to lead the Labour Party, as well as a political cartoon by Martin Rowson depicting the 1995 Conservative leadership contest. The disclosure was made available following an inquiry by the Press Association.

In response to the findings, a parliamentary spokesperson characterized the situation as a "working" matter, implying that the collection is subject to ongoing oversight. While the list of missing items is extensive, the parliamentary authorities have not provided specific details regarding how these items were lost or whether there are active recovery efforts underway. The incident highlights the challenges of managing large, historic art collections within active government buildings, where items are frequently moved, loaned, or displayed in various offices and public areas.
