Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. announced on Friday that discussions with China concerning joint energy exploration in the South China Sea have seen positive movement. Despite persistent maritime disputes between the two nations, Marcos expressed optimism about reaching a formal agreement before his term concludes in 2028.

During his remarks, the President also addressed the ongoing situation at the Second Thomas Shoal. He confirmed the existence of a "provisional understanding" with Beijing regarding the resupply missions to the BRP Sierra Madre, a Philippine naval vessel grounded at the shoal to serve as a military outpost. Marcos emphasized that this arrangement does not constitute a surrender of Philippine sovereignty, nor does it imply that Manila is seeking China's permission to conduct routine missions in its own exclusive economic zone.

The South China Sea remains a significant point of friction, with both nations frequently trading accusations over territorial incursions. While the President’s comments suggest a diplomatic opening regarding energy resources, the administration maintains that these talks are separate from the broader sovereignty disputes that have led to recent confrontations between the two countries' coast guards.
