Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently addressed the status of the country’s decades-long Maoist insurgency, asserting that the movement is in a state of significant decline. For years, the Indian government has engaged in security operations against armed Maoist rebels, often referred to as Naxalites, who have operated primarily in rural and forested regions. He introduced the term “dimagi Naxals,” or “intellectual Naxals,” to describe individuals who may not participate in direct violence but who align with and promote the movement’s underlying ideology. Modi indicated that this ideological influence remains a persistent concern for national security, suggesting that the government’s focus may be shifting from purely military counter-insurgency tactics to addressing the spread of these beliefs within civil society.
